When to Ask for a Video Response
Video responses can be a great way to get a sense of personality for candidates, prior to bringing them in to interview. You can pick up on key visual cues, and see what you can expect before inviting them in to meet. If you have a position where it is especially important to have great energy or a friendly personality, adding a video response prompt can be a great time saver!
Keep in mind that asking for a video response can add some friction to your application process and may result in an overall drop in application volume. We recommend adding it as an optional piece that candidates can include to set themselves apart, but not making it a requirement to apply.
Selecting Your Prompt
Candidates have 60 seconds to record their video. Providing them with the the right prompt will help you to see if they have the qualities that are most important to you. Try one of the questions below, or use these as inspiration to create your own prompt:
- What makes you the best fit for this role?
This standard interview question helps you evaluate a candidate’s confidence and their abilities. It allows them to showcase their skills, while helping you evaluate whether their experience matches what you’re looking for.
- Why are you interested in this company?
Asking about a candidate’s interest in your company will help you determine if they’re the right fit for your culture - and if you’re the right fit for them. You can ask this question to measure their level of knowledge about your company, and to see up front how excited they are about working for you.
- Tell me about yourself.
Though this is a broad question, what a candidate chooses to focus on can tell you a great deal about them, their professional goals, and their experience.
- What is your greatest achievement?
Asking about a candidate’s goals or achievements can help give you a sense of their motivation as well as their accomplishments.
